Travel In Pride: Travel Blue
With the most recent election, the landscape for the LGBTQ community in the U.S. is set to shift toward a much less inclusive and welcoming environment. With Republicans regaining control of the Presidency, the House, and the Senate, and the introduction of Project 2025, it seems their goal is to push the United States toward an ultra-conservative, authoritarian government. In fact, the terms “Gay,” “Transgender,” and “LGBTQ” are mentioned 30 times in what they describe as their mandate for leadership.
While we exercised our voice and vote less than a week ago, we can still influence their policies by using our wallets. The idea of “Travel Blue” has been widely discussed in communities affected by the election as a way to ensure safety. For some, it’s about minimizing the fear of deportation due to immigration status; for others—like myself, a Black man and a gay Black man—it’s about finding places where our civil rights are less likely to be infringed upon. By speaking up with our wallets, we can influence businesses and locations that rely on tourism dollars to thrive, ensuring they support values of inclusion and equality.
The Economic Impact of LGBTQ+ Travel
LGBTQ+ travelers are a powerful economic force. According to a study by Community Marketing Inc., LGBTQ+ travelers contribute an estimated $250 billion annually to the global economy. Tips for LGBTQ+ Travelers
Do Your Research:
Before booking your trip, take the time to research your destination to ensure it is LGBTQ+ friendly. Look for cities and towns with vibrant LGBTQ+ communities and businesses that cater to diverse needs.
Book Inclusive Accommodations:
Opt for hotels and accommodations known for their inclusive policies and welcoming environments. Many LGBTQ+ friendly establishments go the extra mile to ensure all guests feel comfortable and respected.
Pack Accordingly:
Be mindful of local laws and customs, especially regarding public displays of affection. While many destinations are welcoming, others may have more conservative attitudes towards LGBTQ+ rights.
